The Economic Development department's goal is to improve the quality of life for Eureka’s residents, businesses and employees, and visitors through positive action to attract, retain, and expand businesses within the city. The goal encompasses four sub-goals: maintain and create high-quality jobs, build Eureka’s community assets, create a diverse and resilient economy, and strengthen the City’s revenue base, each with an assortment of supporting strategic initiatives and implementing actions.
Our department recently updated its Economic Development Strategic Plan. The updated plan outlines goals, strategies, and action items that will govern economic development staff resourcing for the next five years. The plan can be found here.
Eureka is home to a vibrant and engaged art community- a bright beacon of cultural and artistic creativity throughout the North Coast. In 2017, the City created a Strategic Arts Plan to further solidify the important role of the arts as a driver of community impact and engagement. This plan was created not only to ensure the city effectively leveraged its amazing artistic and cultural assets but to address challenges as well.
As an economic development tactic, the Strategic Arts Plan, developed in collaboration with Eureka’s arts community, lays out actionable goals to support the arts with input from both the City and the community. These projects, including the Eureka Street Art Festival and the Utility Art Boxes have become important catalysts for renewed hope and restoration- a tangible representation of an undeniable renaissance. With ever-increasing community involvement and growing momentum, the Eureka Strategic Arts Plan continues to grow and evolve. The plan can be found here, along with Appendix A and Appendix B.
Did you know that Eureka’s cannabis program falls under Economic Development? Eureka currently has 40+ operating cannabis businesses that have created more than 200+ jobs, invested more than 25M in local building improvements, and has contributed more than 1M in fee revenue to date. Our department is actively working with the Eureka Police Department and the Code Enforcement and Building Department on the Façade Improvement Rebate and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Grant Program.
CPTED is a multi-disciplinary approach to crime prevention that uses urban and architectural design and the management of built and natural environments. This program is intended to improve the appearance of commercial buildings within the City limits of Eureka while promoting building security for Eureka businesses by offering rebates for costs associated with improvements to building exteriors. The City’s CPTED team has had over twenty-five site visits with interested businesses, including Eureka Police Department, Code Enforcement, Building, and Economic Development. As a result, some improvements have already been made, including fresh paint, lighting, landscaping, and added security cameras.
Funding for this program will support upgrades for up to 40 businesses. So far, several businesses have already received funding, and our City Council has extended the program with more funding. If your business is interested in the program, additional information can be found here.
The Economic Development team is creating a new website to promote opportunities for conducting business within the City of Eureka. The new website will feature an interactive GIS map with zoning and land use resources, detailed information on what makes Eureka a great choice for starting or relocating a business, and unique local workforce facts and statistics.
With the Choose Humboldt, Shop Eureka campaign, the City of Eureka works to promote Eureka as the premier place for shopping and dining in Humboldt County. Local business owners highlighted their favorite Eureka holiday traditions and shared ways that citizens could support them into the New Year through a radio campaign and ten videos featuring local businesses. Eureka residents were encouraged to share their commitment and enthusiasm to shop and dine locally by posting the "Shop Local" graphic on social media, using the hashtag #ShopEureka.
As part of the Eureka CARES program, the #DineOutEureka mini-campaign was designed to support local restaurants by encouraging people to post about their meals on social media. Restaurants participated by putting out table tents in their outdoor dining and reception areas. By dining out in Eureka, visitors and residents alike help to ensure our local businesses are around for many years to come.
Each week, the City of Eureka releases a Community Conversation video, featuring short and memorable introductions to Eureka's artists, businesses, first responders, and volunteers who are responsible for extraordinary work in the City of Eureka. Twenty-five videos have been released to date. Citizens can follow the City of Eureka’s Facebook or Instagram pages to watch them all. Community members can nominate friends, neighbors, and colleagues by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The City of Eureka has developed a Neighborhood Mini Grant Program. The Purpose of the program is to provide small grants for volunteers to complete projects in their neighborhood. The goal of the program is to help create awareness and enthusiasm for residents while they take ownership of their neighborhood, empowering and engaging our community.
