Eureka - Council Member Mike Newman and City Manager Bill Panos joined 200 city officials from throughout California on April 24 for the League of California Cities' Legislative Action Day. The annual event brings city officials to the state Capitol to meet with their legislators to discuss issues of importance to California cities.
"I am committed as a Council member to advocating for state policies that help cities effectively deliver services to our residents. The League's annual Legislative Action Day is an opportunity to make the City of Eureka's voice heard in Sacramento. Not only was I able to meet with legislators, but the League's briefings on key legislation, the state budget and economic development provided invaluable information for our city," said Council Member Mike Newman. "I returned to Eureka with inforamtion I can immediately put to use for the city."
The event kicked off Wednesday morning with a budget and issues briefing led by League First Vice President and San Francisco Treasurer Jose Cisneros, League Executive Director Chris McKenzie and League Legislative Director Dan Carrigg. Assembly Member Marc Levine (D-San Rafael) also spoke to city officials Wednesday morning. The morning session concluded with a presentation on the Enterprise Zone program.
Following meetings in the Capitol with their legislators, city officials participated in a bipartisan discussion on efforts to promote job creation, economic development and other issues. This panel included Assembly Member Luis Alejo (D-Salinas), Assembly Member Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) and Assembly Member Kristin Olsen (R-Modesto) and was moderated by League First Vice President and San Francisco Treasurer Jose Cisneros.

We need to restore tools to help revitalize communities, create new good paying jobs and build affordable housing for our residents."
