Hello, I’m Susan Seaman, Mayor of Eureka. Well, we've made it through our first week Sheltering in Place. We’re educating ourselves as much as we can about this virus, but we’re learning even more about our habits and what we’re capable of. Many of us now realize we CAN communicate with video conferencing platforms like ZOOM or Google Hangout. We're noticing how much we touch stuff, what we touch most...and, hopefully, we're disinfecting often in response. We’re learning that we can be stewards to our economy and support our local restaurants by NOT cooking dinner and ordering delivery instead. Parents are becoming teachers, teachers are becoming video personalities and grocery store workers are the new heroes. It’s a lot of change in a short period of time and I want to commend those of you who are taking this seriously. It hasn’t been easy, but many of you have become dedicated to flattening the curve, and for that, I thank you.

All of the Department’s Crews, including Water Distribution, Waste Water Collections, Code Enforcement, Building, Streets, Planning and others will contribute to the effort. The event was originally scheduled in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but public safety power shutoffs conducted by PG&E delayed it.
Director of Public Works Brian Gerving said, “Each of us in the Public Works Department knows someone who has been directly impacted by breast cancer – it may be a family member, a friend, or a colleague. We want to do our part to increase awareness of this important cause and raise funds for the Humboldt Breast and GYN Health Project. We hope that the community shares our concern and contributes anything they can when they see our crews in the field.”

Have you heard about the North Coast Otters Public Art Initiative?
The City of Eureka is preparing for the potential shutdown of PG&E power to the City of Eureka. County OES was notified on Tuesday morning that PG&E may activate Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) in Humboldt County due to extreme fire danger weather along the two main transmission lines into Humboldt County on Hwy 36 and Hwy 299. City of Eureka Public Safety and Public Works crews are ready to respond to the effects of the power outage.
The City of Eureka is ready to respond to the effects of the power outage; however, the decision to turn off the power and the speed at which it is restored is managed solely by PG&E. The utility is working on a solution to generate power locally at its King Salmon power plant that would help offset the effects of any shutoff.
The City of Eureka's EOC is activated and working with County OES and monitoring the situation with assistance from our PG&E liasion.
The City would like to thank its residents that have reached out to the Council and staff regarding the recently proposed Animal Ordinance. Sections 22710 and 9250.7 of the California Vehicle Code authorize the establishment of the Humboldt County Abandoned Vehicle Authority (AVA), as well as the imposition of a fee on all vehicles registered in Humboldt County. The fee, which is referred to as the AVA Fee, is charged at a rate of one (1) dollar for every vehicle registered in the County, and an additional two (2) dollars for certain commercial vehicles registered in the County. The AVA Fees are collected by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and are then dispersed to the Humboldt County Abandoned Vehicle Authority. The fees may only be used for the abatement, removal, and disposal of any abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, or inoperative vehicles, or vehicle parts, located on private or public property within Humboldt County. The AVA Fee must be renewed every ten (10) years.
A YES vote would authorize the DMV to continue collecting the AVA Fee in the amount of one (1) dollar for every vehicle registered in Humboldt County, and an additional two (2) dollars for certain commercial vehicles registered in Humboldt County, for a term of ten (10) years.
A NO vote would mean that the DMV would stop collecting the AVA Fee.
The AVA Fee will not be renewed, and the AVA Fee will not be collected, unless the measure is approved by sixty six percent (66%) of the registered voters voting on the Measure.

Humboldt Waste Management Authority is sponsoring a collection event for over-the-counter, prescription and narcotic drugs on Saturday, January 15th. Flushing drugs down the toilet or disposing them in the trash is not the proper way to dispose of them. Wastewater treatment plants and landfills do not remove the contaminates from the drugs, and they end up polluting the environment. Properly disposing of these drugs is critical in maintaining good water quality in our local waterways and a healthy environment. If you're intersted, more information is available in the following file: Event Flyer
The City Council of the City of Eureka sent a letter to the County Board of Supervisor’s Chairman, Clif Clendenen, enumerating the major concerns the City Council has with the County of Humboldt’s Ridgewood Village project and the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR).
The Council’s concerns include the size of the development; the substantial impact the project will have on the City’s public services, infrastructure, and citizens; and the failure of the DEIR to fully study those impacts and provide required mitigation. Additional issues raised in the letter include the use of a fundamentally flawed traffic model, the connection to Lundblade Drive and traffic issues for Lundbar Hills and other City neighborhoods, as well as identifying mitigation measures, or the lack thereof, both within the City limits and involving the State’s facilities without consultation with either agency.
Finally, the letter also addresses the Council’s concern over the lack of communication from the County regarding the project. The Council concludes by asking the Board of Supervisors to take as much time as needed to properly evaluate and respond to the comments regarding the project and the DEIR, instead of rushing through the project.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s)
Replacing an incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb can help save the planet. Almost 20 pounds of CO2 can be avoided each your by simply replacing a 60-watt incandescent light bulb with a 20-watt compact fluorescent bulb. This is based on only 2 ½ hours of usage each day. Just think how much CO2 can be avoided by replacing all of the incandescent lamps in your house. And, you will reduce your utility bill by about $5.00. Not bad for a $2.00 bulb.

City of Eureka Damage Assessments teams are finding dangerous damage in chimneys and appliance vent pipes.
In many cases the damage caused by the earthquake is not readily visible. Inspectors have found cracks in chimney flues could cause a fire in your house. Leaks in vents from gas appliances such heaters, water heaters, dryers or stoves may release dangerous carbon monoxide.
The flues and bricks of a chimney are designed to protect your house from heat from a fire in your wood stove or fireplace. The earthquake caused noticeable damage to chimneys city-wide. City inspection teams have also found damage that is not easily noticeable. This damage includes cracks in bricks and linings and dislodged chimney insert pipe.
