Residents of the City of Eureka will have an opportunity to serve and help shape the direction of their community by pursuing one of the two upcoming vacancies on the City Council. During this coming November 3, 2020, statewide general election, there will be two (2) seats for the office of City Council Member up for election.
The nomination period for Eureka City Council candidates begins Monday July 13, 2020 through Friday, August 7, 2020. Forms are available at the opening of the nomination period on July 13, 2020. It takes approximately one hour to review the information with the City Clerk. Due to COVID-19 building restrictions, appointments are required.
To be eligible to become a candidate, you must be a registered voter and resident of Wards two (2) or four (4). Ward information is available on-line at “ward maps” or by calling the City Clerk’s Office. Elected Councilmembers receive a stipend of $500 per month. Regular Council meetings are held twice per month on the first and third Tuesdays with special meetings and workshops held as needed. As a member of the City Council, those elected will have a hand in developing the city’s policies, approving ordinances and resolutions, making land-use decisions, and hearing appeals on decisions made by City commissions/committees. Additionally, councilmembers represent the City as a liaison at various regional boards, commissions, and joint power authorities (JPA’s) to which they are assigned as well as represent the City at numerous functions.
